I recently started reading the Women and Hollywood blog. There's a pretty scathing review of Leap Year, which definitely doesn't sound like my sort of film. But what was particularly interesting to me was the discussion of female directors and how Kathryn Bigelow got her first DGA nomination for directing The Hurt Locker. There was some back and forth about asking when a female director is a female director, as Bigelow has a reputation for not focusing on traditionally female topics. The article concludes "This could be one of the big reasons why Kathryn Bigelow will be the breakthrough female director. She’s a woman who doesn’t threaten the universal vision of the world — that boys rule."

Meant to mention that I finally saw the Caprica pilot recently and found there to be some interesting points in it. It does leave off on a cliffhanger and shows us enough to make the idea of finding out the back story of the BSG verse interesting. But the characters are not grabbing me. Perhaps part of this is that there is no Roslin, no Starbuck here (nor even Caprica). I generally found most of the male characters on BSG to be less interesting than the women, or mostly interesting because of the women. So far Caprica is set to be going for the often seen "absent female" focus.

Interesting to hear that the great Leno experiment (also known as bargain basement programming) has been considered a failure and NBC will return to putting something else in its 10 PM lineup, The article I read was focusing on what will happen to Conan O'Brien if Leno gets a late night show again but I'm wondering what NBC will be rerunning at 10 PM since surely it doesn't have a slate of new shows to debut.

So Supernatural Season Five is starting in the UK on Living Tv in February, and OMG they are actually promoting the Show.

They are running what they are calling an "alternate reality game", which basically sounds like a treasure hunt, where players hunt for "Enochian Sigials" hidden in the real world and online and send pics of. Players can also form teams through Facebook.

The prize is "a chance to appear in the show" which would be pretty amazing. The contest is open to UK residents only.

For those of us interested in the use of digital and social media for marketing, it will be interesting to see how it goes. And the CW might pick up an idea or two.

For us Aussies: no word on when SPN will return to network ten. However good news is Rob Benedict has been announced as the 4th guest at the ABHL2 Con in May

And finally the Season 4 Official Companion book is out on 27 July, with the Season 5 book announced for 21 September.

It's absolutely fascinating what that means to Dean and Castiel, as well as all of the other characters. This fic has such a rounded world that it leaves you wanting more.

Summary: In which Castiel is the weird time-traveling freak who just might be the love of Dean Winchester's life.

Why you should read it: The summary of this fic really doesn't do it justice. It's more about figuring out who you are and about how Dean ages. As he grows, who he becomes. Plus, it has angels being just as awful as they are in the show. Castiel throughout this fic is gorgeous and painful. He wants so badly to find his Dean and can't.

Thanks to a gift card over the holiday we ended up with the Scene It Trek Edition. When we played it, it was sad to discover how much of Classic Trek I had to struggle to remember (although given I could remember the first letter of both Tellarites and Andorians, it's questionable how much of this is due to memory loss and how much to brain fog). And given I'd never watched Enterprise or half of Voyager, yeah, we didn't do so well.

Why on earth does this company have a Twilight edition out already but not one on the Whedonverses? I could say, oh SPN, only into its 5th season now and until this last year practically ignored by the media. But Buffy? Dr. Horrible? They get lots of ink. WHERE'S OUR GAME?? We even have 3 Buffy video games for crying out loud. (And boy do we need an SPN one of those).
